With this volume the author enters new territory. Having described the Namibian traditions of fairy tales, trickery and legends in volumes 1 to 5, she now adds 50 stories from the narrator's own life. The stories span an exceedingly wide range, from tales of useful exploits to accounts of life-threatening encounters with wild animals or the fears during the apartheid era. Before our eyes emerge men of different ages and professions, women who are willing to give their lives for the honour of their family, but also saucy young girls and grandmothers who are capable of standing their ground against policemen.

The great change that people experienced during these decades is captured in the text. Older people still celebrated ceremonies such as their coming of age, through which wicked dreams would be supposedly wiped out. Younger people are hardly familiar with that from hearsay. Such are the recorded statements on contemporary history and the history of ideas at the turn of the century.

The author not only examines the topics which are mainly dealt with in the reports but she shows, how with the resources of modern narrative research, the reports are formed. She proves with what great skill and in what magnificent manner many storytellers can ensure that their stories are a source of listening and reading enjoyment.
