Because spoken Japanese is rather different from the literary form, the present study book aims at teaching to use the language in everyday conversation. Therefore the introduction of the grammar is restricted to the essential details to keep the book as easy to understand as possible.

After introducing the written form, its transcription and the pronunciation of Japanese the book presents sections on dialogues about everyday situations, followed by comprehensive exercises with examples and short grammatical explanations. Every section is preceded by a paragraph which sheds light on aspects of Japanese life.

The dialogues are given in Roma-jii and Kanji as a help for beginners and an exercise for advanced learners. A comprehensive appendix contains tables of Kanji, verbal flexions, word lists of interrogative particles, a subject index and Japanese-German and German-Japanese vocabulary (appr. 1,000 entries).
