This compact historical treatise of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) is the third entry into the series “Mission – Past and Present” by the missionary society. Wolfgang Apelt, the society’s registrar has studied the matter for many years and now took upon the task of publishing the history of the UEM and its predecessor organizations to a broad audience. The times of the mission up until World War II lie at the center of this description. The first three chapters detail the Rhenish, the Bethel and the Congo mission until unification between 1970 and 1980.

Information about the conception, development and organization of the predecessor societies are related to the reader. Additionally, the many mission areas in overseas as well as selection, training and everyday life of missionary personnel employed in these areas are described in detail. The era of the Unified Evangelical Mission, and later the United Evangelical Mission, is separated into two periods: the time until reformation in 1996, then reformation and further work up until 2008.

The book is designed bilingually: with the main section presented in a German and an English version, while the appendix is in German with English translations. The numerous photographs and illustrations offer impressions of missionary work, the people involved and the areas covered throughout the centuries. A comprehensive appendix with a chronology and lists of past directors and important members of the UEM conclude the book.

Reviews

Volkmar Wittmütz in Romerike Berge, 2/2009, 50-51
