Dealing with such a broad range of material, Afrikaner schreiben zurück provides an impressive and at times striking account of African social and historical self-reflexivity, part of it located far beyond "Western text-criticism" (p.17). This approach gives the book a strong multidisciplinary character. To my knowledge, this is the first attempt ever made to document African auto-ethnographic production in such a broad-based manner, and to give it the recognition it deserves.
