Proverbs and idioms play an important role in the everyday life of the Oromo people, a group of 30 million speakers living in Ethiopia, Northern Kenya and Somalia. Having been transmitted by word of mouth from generation to generation, these proverbs have become an essential part in everyday life, and at the same time they give expression to the mentality and ideology of the Oromo people.

This collection contains altogether 522 proverbs and idioms of the Oromo with German translations. The most important expressions of all proverbs are explained in a separate vocabulary list.
