For the first time an African scholar speaks out on the art of Black Africa on the basis of new art theories. He analyses African sculptures according to procuct, form, theme, message, usage, observation, intelligibility, time, and space.

Because of its status as an introductive work different methods are discussed in the present book. These are in detail productional, morphological, iconographical-iconological, semiotical, pragmatical, visual, encyclopaedical, topological and historical methods which are applied here.

25 tables and three maps provide illustrative materials for the readers so that they can get a picture of the art in focus – in the truest sense of the word. The mapped sculptures are exhibits belonging to the “Übersee Museum” in Bremen/Germany and the “Gallery Simonis” in Düsseldorf/Germany.
