Berber Languages

The Berber languages, along with the Chadic, Cushitic, Semitic, Omotic languages and old Egyptian, belongs to the phylum of Afro-Asiatic (formerly: Hamito-Semitic) languages. At present Berber languages are found from Egypt across Libya and Algeria to Morocco and from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to south of the Sahara. Although this area is interspersed with large Arabic-speaking regions, speakers of the various Berber languages make up around 50% of the population in Morocco, and about 25% in Algeria.
